  • Aaron Katz wrote and directed this mumblecore comedy drama in which a guy with more ideas than experience plays private eye. Doug (Cris Lankenau) has long had a passion for classic detective fiction and enrolled in a college in Chicago to study forensic science with an eye toward someday working with the police. But after a few months, Doug's ambition runs out of steam, and he leaves the Midwest to move back to his hometown of Portland. Doug ends up moving in with his older sister, Gail (Trieste Kelly Dunn), and taking a variety of odd jobs that won't tax his energy or intelligence. However, Doug unexpectedly gets another shot at becoming a detective when his former girlfriend disappears and he's asked to help track her down. Doug joins forces with his pal Carlos (Ral Castillo) and starts smoking a pipe so he'll feel more like Sherlock Holmes, but as the search goes on the case becomes more complicated (and potentially dangerous) than expected. COLD WEATHER received its world premiere at the 2010 South by Southwest Film Festival.

  • Critic Reviews
"One of the brightest lights of the mumblecore scene, Katz here shows himself to also be one of the few American directors of his generation with a strong sense of composition and movement, sound design as suspense, landscape as character."
    Film Comment

"Mr. Katz's third feature deals with the warming effect of friendship and shared purpose on lives being lived at a simmer."
    Wall Street Journal

"[COLD WEATHER] is like an exquisite minimalist painting -- its beauty will move you, its simplicity will fool you. For there are layers and complexities to be found in the film, like the many mysteries it slowly exposes."
    Los Angeles Times

"Low-key and lovely....With brooding, expressive digital photography, a rooted sense of place and characters that seem as real as the people next door, the director Aaron Katz has created a lived-in world..."
    New York Times

"[T]he movie's big climactic action sequence achieves the effect Katz is going for, building tension from the notion of real people trying to accomplish something dangerous."
    A.V. Club

3.5 stars out of 5 -- "When the film morphs into a mystery, it finds a way of marrying the highly structured plots of film noir and the willfully unstructured storylines of mumblecore."
    Box Office

"It's a thriller involving the personalities of its characters, who we get to know surprisingly well....The acting is so good, you may not notice it."
    Chicago Sun-Times

"[A] remarkably enduring character study....[Katz] gives ample space and time for his characters to reveal themselves through myriad small details and an easygoing naturalism that seems to bring the best out of a uniformly excellent cast."
    Sight and Sound

4 stars out of 5 -- "Unfolding in wintry Portland, this is a beautifully photographed tale, where the mystery itself is a red herring."
