  • Theatrical release: October 29, 1936. COME AND GET IT is based on a novel by Edna Ferber, who founded her story on real-life timber barons, one of whom was director Howard Hawks's grandfather. Howard Hawks was fired over creative differences with producer Samuel Goldwyn, primarily regarding the casting of Frances Farmer as the female lead. The film was completed by William Wyler, and although both men are credited as directors, Wyler believed that Hawks deserved sole credit. Richard Rossen directed the acclaimed logging sequences. Frances Farmer stepped into her first major Hollywood role with COME AND GET IT, and Hawks would later say that she was the best actress he ever worked with. Walter Brennan won the first of his three Academy Awards, earning the Best Supporting Actor prize; it was also the first time an Oscar was awarded for this category. COME AND GET IT received two Oscar nominations, including Best Film Editing. Tennis star Frank Shields made his acting debut in COME AND GET IT. The film features the song "Aura Lee."
