This agreeable exercise in updating the classics brings prog, electronica, and frequent heavy metal twists to opera highlights in versions that will either stun or delight aficionados. The East Village Opera Company (which actually includes a Canadian singer and the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra in its number) brings a world music flavor to Verdi's "La Donna E Mobile," and channels Bizet's "Habanera" through the reggae sensibilities of the Police. Their version of Purcell's "When I Am Laid in Earth" (rapidly becoming an unlikely pop favorite, courtesy of versions by both Richard Thompson and Alison Moyet) would warm the cockles of the late Queen vocalist Freddie Mercury's heart.
