Metamora: Pete Sutherland (guitar, fiddle, synthesizer); Malcolm Dalglish (hammer dulcimer); Grey Larsen (hardanger fiddle, flute, whistle, anglo concertina, piano, synthesizer).
More nature songwriting and a little less soul mark this slick 1987 effort by trio Metamora. The inclusion of synthesizers playing sweet droning sounds underneath the tunes makes this release more in the "new age" category than their previous efforts. Vocal songs have (thankfully) been dropped altogether, letting the group shine solely with their instrumental virtuosity. More of a nod to American and European folk traditions as opposed to the more contemporary sound found on previous efforts. Energy on the whole is more balanced (the cynical would say "static"). Songs in and of themselves are delightful -- Larsen is all over the place with the flute -- and Sutherland's fiddle churns out some killer Irish reels. This release made ripe their impending contract with Windham Hill Records. ~ Mark W. B. Allender
