  • Her long, shiny hair covering much of her face, and an unmistakable slouch that begs viewers not to see her for the hypnotic beauty that she truly is, Cat Power (ne Chan Marshall) casts a hypnotic spell on all who watch her perform. Strangely and awkwardly entrancing, the singer is possessed with a voice that is strong, haunting, and slightly off-key, but never lacking in raw emotion. SPEAKING FOR TREES is an experimental music film that uses the singer's odd magnetism as its centerpiece. Directed by Mark Borthwick, the film places Cat Power in the midst of a forest, clad in baggy understated clothing and armed with her guitar. She sings many of her entrancing songs, including "I Don't Blame You," as well as a stunning array of covers that she makes her own, from artists as diverse as Bob Dylan and Sonic Youth. In addition, three extra short films set to Marshall's music are showcased. A beautifully packaged book of Borthwick's still photographs is included.
