  • developments. It begins with 400 YEARS OF THE TELESCOPE, a look at the history of the device, from the Copernican and Galilean eras, through the recent days of the Hubble Telescope. Next up is HUBBLE'S AMAZING RESCUE, about NASA's emergency service mission to fix the device in the spring of 2009. This program also describes the various measures belying the repairs, many of them thoroughly ingenious - culminating with the longest and most elaborate spacewalk in human history. The third documentary on the slate, SEEING IN THE DARK, is an adaptation of Timothy Ferris's book that revels in the magnificence of stargazing from an earthbound perspective, in its many variations - such as the research of astronomers and children's efforts to learn the constellations. Finally, TELESCOPE: HUNTING THE EDGE OF SPACE commemorates the 20th Anniversary of the Hubble launch, then uses this as a springboard into a broader and longer history of the telescope per se. It concludes with an examination of an entire family of mammoth telescopes that Hubble typifies - and that raise serious, profound questions about the nature of our universe.
