The back cover of the CD proudly proclaims "14 songs, 23 minutes." The Red Aunts' first album for Epitaph Records, true to the punk ethic of this record label, runs like a Ramones record. Once one song is over, another one starts, with the same manic energy of its predecessor. Alienation seems to be a theme on the album, particularly songs like "Krush" and "Hate" (which contains the lyric "I hate everyone but you"). But instead of being angry, the music seems celebratory (particularly "Mota" and the opening track, "Freakathon," which is their standard). Even though the songs seem like blueprint punk, slide guitars and unexpected changes keep the songs from being predictable, which is often a problem with much of the music on the Epitaph label. ~ Brian Flota

  • Critic Reviews
    Option (7-8/95, p.132) - "...tidal waves of screaming sonic dissonance. It's a bonnafide, garage-made, road-trip approved, skate-thrash, aggro-guitar-oriented quick fix of adrenaline-surged, high-decibel rawk..."
Melody Maker (4/22/95, p.35) - "...Four cute-lookin' gals...sing in kooky, Annabella Lu-Win-type voices: `I'm bound for Black Mountain/Me and my razor and my gun/I'm gonna shoot him if he stands still/And cut him if he runs.' Guitars blare, drums cause earthquakes and the bassist sounds like she was at the dentist when they were recording this. What further recommendation do you need?"
