While Taproot could be hastily labeled a rapcore band, there's a great deal more here than a series of grooving, detuned riffs. Vocalist Stephen Richards is sure to catch the attention of Faith No More fans with his schizophrenic vocal approach, especially on tracks such as "Mentobe" and "Believed."
Love/hate contradictions and self-loathing are the focus of "I Am" and "Mirror's Reflection," while "Dragged Down" laments over a friend who has become an emotional vampire. The Mike Patton comparisons are unavoidable on tracks such as "Emotional Times" and the particularly mosh-worthy "1 Nite Stand." The high-strung, positive energy of "Smile" and the heartfelt "Now" show the many dimensions and diversity of a band whose finger is firmly on the pulse of modern heavy music.

  • Critic Reviews
Rolling Stone (8/17/00, p.110) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...A short, sharp shock...of pure heartland heavy-rock rage....becoming one monstrous, challenging opus of spiky sonics, with one song blendingn into the next one - but in a good way..."
    Alternative Press (11/00, p.137) - 3 out of 5 - "...Undeniably infectious..."
CMJ (7/10/00, p.24) - "...A head-turning, mosh-approved debut...sounding like Faith No More engorged with programming or Incubus spiked with more guitar grit..."
