Recorded by Hubert de Fraysseix in the '70s, the flamenco heard on Spain - From Granada to Sevilla is of a slightly less tourist-pleasing form than some of what's on the market today. The singers, Pepe Albaycin and Curro de Utrero, are able to pull emotion from their notes well, though perhaps not at the level of a Camaron de la Isla. The guitarists, Pepe Tranca and Rr de Cordoba, have lightning-fast abilities (just listen to the versions of "Tarentos"), but at the same time don't always make use of them (even in the Malaguenas, which would be one of the best places to let loose). Essentially the full range of the flamenco repertoire is represented, from the Bulerias and the well-known Malaguenas to the Saeta (a more devotional piece still associated with Holy Week processionals). There are other flamenco albums out there with a better lineup (such as Cante Flamenco on Nimbus), or with one or two standout stars (the Camaron de la Isla collaborations with Tomatito), but this one's a decent starting album for new listeners that's not too watered down for their own good. ~ Adam Greenberg
