RAIN, HAIL OR SHINE is an Enhanced CD containing both a full audio program as well as video files, photos, interactive interviews and extra music.
Battlefield Band: Davy Steele (vocals, guitar, bodhran); Alan Reid (vocals, keyboards); John McCusker (various instruments); Mike Katz (guitar, Highland & small pipes, whistle).
Recorded at Temple Record Studio, Midlothian, Scotland.
Over the years, the Battlefield Band have weathered a lot of personnel changes, yet have still managed to maintain the integrity of their traditional Celtic sound. RAIN, HAIL OR SHINE witnesses the replacement of longtime Battlefield members Alistair Russell and Iain MacDonald with guitarist/singer/songwriter Davy Steele and piper Mike Katz. Here, as with all Battlefield albums, there's a compelling mixture of new and traditional material, an extremely high level of musicianship, and equal attention paid each member of the quartet.
While founding member Alan Reid contributes two excellent original compositions, "The Lass O' Glencoe" and "Jenny O' the Braes," and the exceptional fiddle and whistle skills of John McCusker distinguish tracks like "Magheracloone," it's the newcomers' songs here that will make Battlefield fans stand up and take notice. Katz's Highland pipes performance on the closing quatrain of tunes is strong, while Davy Steele's keen vocals and excellent songwriting ("The Beaches of St. Valery" is one of the high points here) restore a vitality and verve to the ensemble. RAIN, HAIL OR SHINE sustains the Battlefield Band's miraculous longevity.
