Mixing free jazz, post bop, fusion, post rock, and splashes of ambient electronica, Chicago Underground Trio have been making a smart, sophisticated noise since the late 1990s. CHRONICLE is a representative sampling of the group's aesthetic, showing their deft weaving of various experimental genre elements into a style colored with pulses, bursts of energy, swaths of sonic texture, and high-caliber improvisation. This comes recommended to fans of both free jazz and genre-splicing experimental rock. CHRONICLE is also available as a DVD, which features a concert performance and a visually arresting light-and-color show by director Raymond Salvatore Harmon.

  • Critic Reviews
The Wire (p.61) - "[T]he placement of sounds is particularly hallucinatory, with electronics occasionally devouring the rhythms section of drummer Chad Taylor and bassist Jason Ajemian."
Down Beat (p.85) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "A live performance filled with atmospheric electro-acoustic transformations, CHRONICLE presents a trio with a range of textures, tonalities and approaches to group interaction."
JazzTimes (p.94) - "Our preconceived expectations of what things might be are challenged, mocked and then reimagined, only to dissolve and reemerge yet again in new forms."
