Full performer name: William Parker & The Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra.
Big, sprawling, chaotic, and gargantuan, William Parker's Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra often seems on the verge of imploding under its own weight, but of course it never does, and that is part of the fun. Bringing together many of the best improvisers from the New York scene, Parker sets the environment for sustained interaction with slabs of powerhouse sounds that continue uninterruptedly. The bassist sets the tone compositionally with riffs over which the many soloists soar. Among the highlights are energetic contributions from Charles Waters on clarinet, Sabir Mateen on tenor sax, and Lewis Barnes on trumpet, and a stunning drum duo between Guillermo Brown and Andrew Barker. Although many of the members of the group are closely affiliated with Parker, some prominent names are not, including trombonists Masahiko Kono and Dick Griffin and clarinetist Waters, each of whom fits in easily. Those who enjoy big-band abstractions immersed in wild, loud, and abrasive surroundings -- 1960s style -- should appreciate the freestyle energy emanating from the orchestra. Comparisons to the Globe Unity Orchestra and the huge monoliths led by Alan Silva with his Celestial Communications Orchestra come to mind, but Parker is an individualist who stamps his own personality on everything he does. At first blush, the uninitiated will likely find this all overwhelmingly imposing, but the rewards are numerous for the disciplined listener who takes the time to listen closely. Kudos to the Italian label Splasc(h) Records for making this available to an international audience. ~ Steven Loewy
