  • Fleshing out the one-dimensional image of the Al Qaeda leader that dominates Western perceptions, director Zvi Dor-Ner has created a highly objective documentary that traces the life of Osama Bin Laden. Told through the first person accounts of people who have known bin Laden at various points in his life, audiences are told of his upper-class childhood, the time he spent fighting the Soviet Union in Afghanistan, and his disapproval of the American presence in Saudi Arabia. The tale ends with the events leading up to September 11, 2001, highlighting Osama's theocratic convictions and his bitterness at losing his chance for a comfortable, plutocratic existence. Robert Fisk discusses his experience as the first Western journalist to interview Bin Laden, while Brian Fyfield-Shayler talks about what it was like to teach him in grade school. Also interviewed are Essam Deraz, who fought in Afghanistan with him, and Bin Laden's biographer. Together, this group of individuals, who hail from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, provides an incomparable insight into the man behind one of the most horrific acts of terrorism in American history.
