The Moiseyev Dance Company debuted in the United States April 14, 1958 at New York's Metropolitan Opera House, under the direction of Sol Hurok. Choreographer and ballet master, Igor Moiseyev, was a lead dancer at the Bolshoi, when he decided to establish his own dance company in 1937. His purpose was to "create classic national dances; to raise the skill of performance of folk dances to the highest artistic level, and to improve ancient dances in such a way as to influence the creation of new national dances." The performance presented on this video took place in 1980 at the Congress Hall in Moscow as part of the Olympic Cultural Program. Selections include: Suite of Russian Folk Dances; The Moldavian Suite, which includes Hora, Chiokyrlie (The Lark) and Zhok; Old City Quadrille; The Soccer Match; Tajik's Dance of Happiness; Azerbaijan Shepard Dance Suite; and Ukranian "Gopak" Dance
