Between his solo projects as Quasimoto, his jazz-influenced electronica projects, and his endless collaborations with any number of other artists, producer and MC Madlib has his fingers in a lot of pies. For a man who seems to make music in his sleep, then, it's no surprise to see a 35-track compilation of instrumental hip-hop tracks bearing Madlib's distinctively eclectic stamp.
Fashioned as a soundtrack to a movie that doesn't exist, BEAT KONDUCTA showcases the artist's collage-heavy sonic approach, which draws heavily on 1970s soul samples, radical stylistic juxtapositions, and groove-heavy beats. Experimental yet mesmerizing, Madlib offers further proof with this instrumental set that he's one of the brightest lights in the underground scene.

  • Critic Reviews
The Wire (p.61) - "Hear what it is that gives the producer's beats their dolorous languor and indirection: the three-bar loops, the barely perceptible tempo fluctuations, the drum and melody loops in canon-at-the-quaver."
