Boredom was the motivation for the inception of Fenix Tx, and in this band's case the end certainly justifies the means. These self-proclaimed "Houston ghetto" boys took the star-inspired moniker "Riverfenix" and eventually changed it to avoid legal hassles. After scaring up radio interest, the band eventually found MCA knocking on their door to rush out this major label debut, FENIX TX.
Following in the footsteps of obvious influences such as The Descendents and Bad Religion, Fenix Tx pump out short, to-the-point power-pop punk songs like the Green Day-ish "Minimum Wage," and the West Coast daydream of "Surf Song." Sounding like the bastard cousin to Blink 182, "All My Fault" is an obvious highlight. "Jolly Green Dumbass" and "G.B.O.H" are punk tales of heartbreak, while "Ben" sees the song's protagonist struggling with fate. Not that the band dwells too long this serious subject matter; "Apple Pie Cowboy Toothpaste" pays tribute to "Revenge Of The Nerds," while the hilariously titled "Jean Claude Trans Am" mixes catchy vocal harmonies with brash tongue in cheek attitude.
