  • Credits

Robyn Hitchcock, seemingly re-energized from his early-2000s reunion with the Soft Boys, released a lot of material in the 2000s, but this '09 album, featuring the Venus 3 and a passel of guest artists, stands out as a particularly vibrant entry, recalling his best '80s and '90s work. A combination of left-field but unfailingly gorgeous hooks, full-blooded vocal perfomances, and shiny production conspire to dazzle and intrigue. Stand-outs include the loping country shuffle "Hurry for the Sky," the sweet folk harmonies on "16 Years," the catchy Bo Diddley stomper "Up to Our Nex" (originally written for the film RACHEL GETTING MARRIED), and the epic lite-psychedelia of the title track.

  • Critic Reviews
Rolling Stone (p.66) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Hitchcock brings Hollies-ish harmonies, horns and tastefully distorted guitars to 'Saturday Groovers' and a Western twang to 'Hurry for the Sky.'"
Spin (p.80) - "Curiously, his psychedelic folk rock sounds more youthful now than it did in the '80s."
Entertainment Weekly (p.58) - "Backed once again by three members of R.E.M., Hitchcock sprinkles his lilting nocturnes, jingle-jangle garage rock, and casual anthems with pop glitter." -- Grade: A
Dirty Linen (p.51) - "[T]he strongest batch of songs Hitchcock has pulled out of his hat since the glory days of the Egyptians back in the 1980s....Hitchcock sounds like he is having more fun on this album than he has in years."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.107) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "The title track saves the day....[It] shows something sleek and ominous still looming in the fog of Hitchcock's imagination."
Pitchfork (Website) - "Never shy of incorporating a wide range of styles into his music, Hitchcock mirrors his influences with thoughtful enthusiasm while throwing his characteristic sardonic humor into the mix."
Record Collector (magazine) (p.104) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "[W]ith superb arrangements that recall -- without ever imitating -- a range of influences that cover The Byrds, the Stones, country music and blues."
