On their 2004 release, ONE SOUL NOW, Cowboy Junkies enter their third decade of making music, with 10 songs bearing the band's trademark languid, yet occasionally biting, sound. Producer Michael Timmins' continues to wield a crunchy guitar sound that's clearly out of the Neil Young school of gnarly emoting and serves as the perfect counterbalance to sister Margo's smoky vocalizing. This effective tandem's chemistry yields treasures ranging from the twangy, dream-pop of the title cut to the hypnotic melancholia of "Notes Falling Slow." Young's influence couldn't be anymore apparent than on "From Hunting Ground to City," a slow-core gem that sounds like it could have been an EVERYBODY KNOWS THIS IS NOWHERE outtake. While it may seem like the Cowboy Junkies are looking to be the poster children for depression, not all is gloom and doom on this outing. These Canadians do present some more upbeat numbers, including the mid-tempo rocker "The Stars of Our Stars" and the organ-soaked "No Long Journey Home," which maintains a snappy delivery despite its theme of getting older. As for the Cowboy Junkies themselves, ONE SOUL NOW reveals them to be aging quite well.
