Japanese sludge metalists Boris have been releasing a diverse array of albums at a brisk clip since the mid 1990s. For 2007's RAINBOW (released overseas a year earlier), the trio pulls back from overt metal trappings and continues to refine the majestic melodicism that was explored so wonderfully on the opening track of 2005's PINK album, while simultaneously experimenting with a variety of more straightforward rock styles.
They are joined here by Japanese psych-guitar icon Michio Kurihara, who delivers epic, sprawling guitar solos that push the already atmospheric compositions into another sonic galaxy. There are a number of subtle moments (the gently pulsing title track and "My Rain," for example), but when taken as a whole, RAINBOW is a beautifully thundering album as mystical and awe-inspiring as its title subject.

  • Critic Reviews
Spin (p.91) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Everyone goes back to their '70s roots on this surprisingly chill outing....Music for space gods returning to earth."
Magnet (p.90) - "[The album] ventures into straight-up ambient pop....[With] plaintively plucked instrumental interludes such as 'My Rain.'"
The Wire (p.45) - "[A]iry West Coast psych-rock with the occasional folk tinge. Kurihara's fluid yet corrosive guitar invests each song with an edge..."
CMJ (p.40) - "Boris guitarist Wata songs on the somber 'Rainbow,' bringing a newfound balance to their sound, and the trio reacts well to Kurihara's spontaneous solos."
