The String Quartet Tribute to Black Sabbath presents nine instrumental chamber arrangements of songs culled from the iconic metal outfit's most fertile years, roughly 1971-1973. It is performed by a Czech string quartet that includes violinists Petr Uhlir and Jan Alan, violist Jiri Masarik, cellist Pavel Malina, and the contrabass of Roman Finger. The musicians don't try to emulate Sabbath's deconstructed blues sludge; instead, they deliver a vibe similar to the disorienting creepiness of the group's best material. "Sweet Leaf" and "Iron Man" are imbued with hints of elegiac melody, courtesy of the violins. But they still retain the ever-advancing riffs of the original recordings. "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" wanders a bit, but could still make it onto any horror movie soundtrack. In fact, the entire album wouldn't be out of place as background music in Vlad the Impaler's lair. Also included in the collection is "Sacrament," a piece inspired by Black Sabbath. ~ Johnny Loftus
