With their major-label debut, 1986's VAN GO, the Beat Farmers, like many of their roots-rock contemporaries, took a major step towards mainstream heartland rock of the Springsteen-Petty-Mellencamp variety. Luckily, producer Craig Leon (Ramones, Bangles) keeps the group from sliding too far over the line into slickness, setting new guitarist Buddy Blue's slippery slide work and Country Dick Montana's wild-eyed voice in a comfortable but not too rough environment.
A smoking version of Neil Young's "Powderfinger"--a different recording of which had appeared on the preceding GLAD 'N' GREASY EP--is the album's centerpiece, but it's the originals, including the manic "Buy Me a Car" and "Gun Sale At the Church," that really stand out. Best of all, the Beat Farmers never made the same street-cred-destroying mistake as the Long Ryders and Del Fuegos by appearing in a beer commercial.
