Crazy, Stupid, Love. [DVD] [Canadian; French] [1 disc]
Region 1 USA/CA (
Sad-sack divorce Cal Weaver (Steve Carell) finds his second wind in life after meeting a handsome young ladies' man who teaches him how to become a master of the modern dating scene. A devoted family man who married his high school sweetheart, Cal had a great house and a stable job when his wife, Emily (Julianne Moore), left him to be with another man. When Emily announces that she's filing for divorce, Cal finds himself awkwardly thrust into the dating scene and begins drinking his nights away at the local pub. Just when it's starting to look as if there's no hope for Cal, confirmed bachelor Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling) decides to add some much-needed excitement to the sulking, newly single father's life. Before long, Cal's rough edges have all been smoothed out; he's mastered the fine art of flirting and develops a distinct sense of style that sets him apart from the pack. But just as Cal starts to turn heads, his adolescent son, Robbie, develops a big crush on his teenage babysitter, Jessica. Unfortunately for Robbie, Jessica only has eyes for Cal. Meanwhile, Cal can't help but feel like something substantial is missing from his life, and decides that the only way to set things straight is by listening to his heart.

"[The film] fills its scenes with bright surprises while making an appealing new case for the old-fashioned notion of soul mates."
Wall Street Journal
3 stars out of 4 -- "CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE is a sweet romantic comedy about good-hearted people....Marisa Tomei enters the movie as a tornado of warm comic energy."
"CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE is one from the heart and one for the heart....It may well restore your faith in the very possibility of love, to say nothing of romantic comedies."
Los Angeles Times
4.5 stars out of 5 -- "[A] crazy funny delight....The only thing 3D about this sexy, hilarious romp is a script full of three-dimensional human beings."
"Everyone in CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE is served well by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa's crisp, intelligent direction. Their instincts keep the story moving deftly..."
"[R]emarkably sane and reasonably smart....This movie, packed with appealing stars, is a smooth blend of modern comic genres with a surprising undercurrent of dark, difficult emotion."
New York Times
"[T]he interplay between Carell and Gosling generates most of the comedy....Gosling and Stone, too, have wonderful chemistry..."
"[A] terrifically amusing study in contemporary behavior....Carell gives a ruefully funny and lived-in performance..." -- Grade: A
3 stars out of 4 -- "What makes CRAZY STUPID LOVE a cut above is actors who let pain seep into the laughs. Here's a comedy you really can take to heart."
"CRAZY is clever....The script sets up rote situations, then turns them on their head or takes them in unexpected directions."
4 stars out of 5 -- "It's a funny movie that tiptoes into adult pain, and it's full of witty touches..."
