  • One of the central figures of early Japanese cinema, Hiroshi Shimizu is a master of minor notes and minute heartbreak. His lovingly photographed films--often quite brief, and silent--study the small emotional crests and valleys that have enormous effects on individual lives. In JAPANESE GIRLS AT THE HARBOR (1933), a young woman follows feelings of jealousy through to a devastating end. MR. THANK YOU (1936) uses a gentle-hearted bus driver as a lens through which to view the Depression-era pathos of an entire nation. THE MASSEURS AND A WOMAN (1938) lightly explores the toll of (and triumph over) loneliness. And ORNAMENTAL HAIRPIN (1941) watches as a pair of reluctant lovers connect in spite of all of their scars. Though Shimizu's name has gotten less familiar over the years, this remarkable collection of worthy relics proves that his storytelling prowess remains as potent as ever.
