In the world of rock theater, HEDWIG, the show that took New York by storm, is about as close as the '90s ever got to real rock & roll. Miles away from the mannered pop of RENT, HEDWIG's engine runs on hard-hitting glam-rock with occasional touches of post-punk and hard rock. Thematically, one might make an association with the ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW, but the only thing the two share is a main character of "dubious gender." Hedwig is the frontman/woman for the Angry Inch, and he/she deals very graphically with the subject of transexuality. The good-natured decadence of Rocky Horror seems like a candy store daydream compared to the dark, postmodern emotional landscape that dominates HEDWIG. Those who long for the golden days of Bowie and T. Rex with a bit of a '90s update will enjoy both the show and the album, as will anyone with a taste for the dark underbelly of modern sexuality.

  • Critic Reviews
Rolling Stone (2/18/99, p.58) - "...the first undeniably kick-ass rock musical....packs more volume, guitars, hooks, aspirations and inspirations into its twelve storytelling tunes than typical Broadway and Top Forty combined."
Spin (4/99, pp.161-162) - 8 (out of 10) - "...just the right mixture of cringe pop...and punk rock, putting the story across with both sleazoid gusto and arch knowingness--plus a few Plato references..."
Entertainment Weekly (3/12/99, p.71) - "...the way both album and musical embalm rock as an art form of the past is eerily compelling." - Rating: B
CMJ (3/8/99, p.26) - "...probably the most legitmately scorching rock musical ever....HEDWIG holds up as a theatrically intense and often wickedly funny rock album..."
