Music from and "inspired by" the movie The Hanging Garden. This means the CD is more of a various-artists compilation than a soundtrack, since a number of tracks do not actually appear in the film. The music itself, for the most part, is Celtic, in various forms, mixed in with a few alternative artists (Ani DiFranco, Maryn Cadell). There are a lot of interesting sounds on the CD, not the least being country artist Lori Yates taking a stab at electronic dance music, which she pulls off remarkably well. Maritime artists dominate the set, and quite frankly are the highlights of the CD, with artists such as Aether (with the beautiful "Half Light"), Laurel MacDonald, Deb Montgomery, and Mary Jane Lammond. Ashley MacIsaac (who also has a small role in the film) comes through with the energetic, and exciting "Ashley's Reel." Also present in the mix are Jane Siberry (with the sweet, gentle "When Spring Comes"), Spirit of the West, the Rankin Family, and Leahy. The CD does serve as a diverse overview of modern Celtic music, and as a soundtrack, is able to convey the overall feeling of the film it represents. Unfortunately, as is the nature of various-artists compilations, there are number of songs that detract from the flow of the CD (Ani DiFranco and Mae Moore being the standouts). ~ Aaron Badgley
