Inglourious Basterds [DVD] [Canadian; French]
Region 1 USA/CA (
A group of hardened Nazi killers stalk their prey in Nazi-occupied France as a Jewish cinema owner plots to take down top-ranking SS officers during the official premiere of a high-profile German propaganda film. As far as Lt. Aldo Raine -- aka "Aldo the Apache" (Brad Pitt) -- is concerned, the only good Nazi is a dead Nazi. Raine's mission is to strike fear into the heart of Adolf Hitler by brutally murdering as many goose-steppers as possible, or die trying. In order to accomplish that goal, Lt. Raine recruits a ruthless team of cold-blooded killers known as "The Basterds" which includes baseball-bat-wielding Bostonian Sgt. Donnie Donowitz (aka "The Bear Jew," Eli Roth) and steely psychopath Sgt. Hugo Stiglitz (Til Schweiger), among others. When the Basterds' secret rendezvous with turncoat German actress Bridget von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) goes awry, they learn that the Nazis will be staging the French premiere of "The Nation's Pride," a rousing propaganda film based on the exploits of German hero Fredrick Zoller (Daniel Brhl), at a modest theater owned by Jewish cinephile Shoshanna Dreyfus (Mlanie Laurent), posing as a Gentile after the brutal murder of her family by the ruthless Col. Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz). As the Basterds hatch an explosive plan to take out as many Nazis as possible at the premiere, they remain completely oblivious to the fact that Shoshanna, too, longs to bring the Third Reich to its knees, and that she's willing to sacrifice her beloved theater in the process.

"[A]n increasingly entertaining fantasia in which the history of World War II is wildly reimagined....The picture is completely distinctive piece of American pop art with a strong Euro flavor that's new for the director."
"Tarantino builds his movie as a collage of interlocking set pieces -- cinematically dazzling, to be sure, enhanced by a meticulously chosen retro soundtrack..." -- Grade: B
"Quentin Tarantino's INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS is a big, bold audacious war movie....He's the real thing, a director of quixotic delights."
4 stars out of 5 -- "QUENTIN TARANTINO allows full reign to his boyish enthusiasm with INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, which takes an impish delight in sending up such Second World War adventures as THE DIRTY DOZEN and WHERE EAGLES DARE..."
"[I]t immediately introduces us to its most polished, most successful character, Landa, beautifully played by German-born Waltz....Having just as much fun is Pitt, who seems more relaxed and comfortable in these comic character parts than in conventional leading man roles."
Los Angeles Times
"From the moment the charming, smiling, laughing Nazi in INGLORIOUS BASTERDS, Quentin Tarantino's latest cinematic happenings, sweeps onto the screen, he owns this film even more than its maker....Mr. Tarantino gives you a lot to chew on..."
New York Times
"[The film] features some thrilling action sequences, in which Tarantino's gift for dialogue gets honed to a razor-dangerous edge, and some seamlessly integrated reflections on cinema's role in shaping and reflecting history."
3.5 stars out of 4 -- "Within the first frames of writer/director Quentin Tarantino's audacious dismantling of history, you may feel as if you took a hit of pure oxygen. His tale, with its tense and jangly pacing, is immediately riveting."
3 stars out of 4 -- "[H]ere's Tarantino with the oxygen blast of multilingual pulp poetry....For anyone professing true movie love, there's no resisting it."
Included in Entertainment Weekly's "The Best Films Of The Year" -- "INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS is a film of such ferociously inspired, suspenseful dazzle that it just about heightens your senses."
Ranked #8 in USA Today's "Top Ten Films Of 2009."
3 stars out of 5 -- "Lively and literate, INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS feels fresher than any Tarantino film in a while."
