The brass shows the European heritage of the island of Mompos, while the rhythms derive from Africa and many of the traditions and melodies are indigenous, making for a unique blend, most obvious in the cumbia beats that power a few tracks here, but notably the pulsing opener, \"Manita Uribe,\" which could fill any dancefloor anywhere in the world, both powerful and soulful. If cumbia was all this album had to offer it would be enough, especially if Totó La Momposina were singing in her sensual, persuasive voice. But instead, as with much of her recorded work, it runs the gamut from the folkloric, with cactus wood flutes, to the more primal, very African drumming of \"Tenbandumba.\" It's the very real sound of Colombia, from the villages rather than the cities, the grassroots rather than shiny pop music. But it's as addictive, and certainly more real, than any pop confection.
