Liner Note Author: John Schaefer.
Photographers: Cara Story; Robert Adam Mayer ; Angelica Schönherz; Ruth Leitman; Michael Cuno; Irene Young; Ray Katchatorian; Jimmy Ienner, Jr.; Anne Hamersky.
This Windham Hill compilation brings together some bright lights in the New Age field for a series of imaginative reinterpretations of classical themes. Keyboardist Patrick O'Hearn, guitarist Philip Aaberg, violinist Tracy Silverman, and former Oregon reedman Paul McCandless are among the talents featured here, and the elegance, subtlety, and technical expertise they bring to their respective entries is impressive. The program selections are of a uniformly sterling quality, as they include the work of such immortals as Handel, Barber, Bach, and Rodrigo.
Yet while the musicians uphold the majesty and historical weight of these pieces, they also bring to the table a decidedly contemporary sensibility, as evidenced by Philippe Saisse's clattering percussion/synth version of Bach's "Air on a G String" or Silverman's delay-heavy take on the same composer. With its respect for tradition and inventive attention to new sounds, ADAGIO: A WINDHAM HILL COLLECTION is likely to please fans of classical and New Age alike.
