Personnel: Dexter Gordon (tenor saxophone); Rolf Ericson (trumpet); Lars Sjosten (piano); Sture Nordin (bass); Per Hulten (drums).
Recorded live at Gamlingen, Stockholm, Sweden.
Personnel: Dexter Gordon (tenor saxophone); Rolf Ericson (trumpet); Lars Sjösten (piano); Per Hulten (drums).
Recording information: Gamlingen, Stockholm, Sweden (1964-1965).
Photographer: Nils Winther.
This live recording from Stockholm finds Gordon, fully immersed in his expatriate phase, still exploring the range of emotions that always fed his improvisatory flights. Unlike the '70s recordings that featured his more well-known European group of Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen, Alex Riel and Kenny Drew, AFTER MIDNIGHT has a raw, off-the-cuff feeling. Rolf Ericson's warbling trumpet provides a nice foil for Gordon on "Three O'Clock In The Morning." On Miles' "Prancin'" drummer Per Hulten sounds like he's been absorbing American jazz intravenously for most of his life. Gordon himself is emotive and resourceful as ever, leading the group through unexpected changes in dynamics and harmony throughout.
