The Blackwood Brothers sang gospel for some six decades, and for half of that time, from the '50s through the '70s, they were one of the most popular gospel groups in the U.S., so much so that a young, as yet undiscovered Elvis Presley unsuccessfully auditioned for the group (Presley and the Blackwood Brothers later ended up label-mates at RCA Records). This sampler set may not actually be the absolute "best" of the group's catalog, but it's enough to show why they were so admired, and makes a nice, if cursory, introduction to the Blackwood Brothers. ~ Steve Leggett
