Since it first hit television screens in 2002, the talent-search reality-show AMERICAN IDOL has become a full-blown pop-culture phenomenon that, at its best, embodies the American Dream, and, at its worst, provides the guilty-pleasure quotient of an unusually gruesome train wreck.
