Sparks includes: Ron Mael, Russell Mael.
Sparks: Russell Mael (vocals); Bob Haag (guitar, background vocals); Ron Mael (keyboards, synthesizer); James Goodwin (synthesizer); Leslie Bohem (bass, background vocals); David Kendrick (drums); Mack (programming).
Recorded at MusicLand Studios, Munich, West Germany.
Possibly the best album in Sparks' long and varied career, ANGST IN MY PANTS is also a perfect example of American synth-pop at its most musically and lyrically creative. From the gently throbbing title track through to the completely bizarre, pounding "Eaten By The Monster Of Love," every tune is a perfect marriage of amazingly catchy keyboard-dominated pop and surreal, almost Dadaist lyrics.
Singer Russell Mael delivers his keyboardist brother Ron's prolix, pun-filled, and engagingly satirical lyrics with just the right notes of silliness and sincerity. Such tunes as "Instant Weight Loss" and the Beach Boys pastiche "Sextown U.S.A." definitely stand out. It's a rare and impressive feat to make an album that's consistently funny without being merely jokey. With the brilliantly titled ANGST IN MY PANTS, Sparks created just such an album.
