Personnel includes: Slim Gaillard, Buddy Tate, Jay McShann, Jay Thomas.
Recorded in 1982.
Personnel: Slim Gaillard (vocals, guitar, piano); Buddy Tate (clarinet, tenor saxophone); Jay Thomas (alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trumpet); Digby Fairweather (cornet); Jay McShann (piano); Allan Ganley (drums).
Liner Note Author: Alastair Robertson.
Recording information: Wave Studios, London, England (10/30/1982).
This album was recorded in England in 1982, while Gaillard was in the midst of a European tour. He'd been performing for nearly 50 years by the time of these sessions, and he'd lost none of his ingratiating charms and manner. His voice--full of confidence and grace--had the resonance of a man then age 66 who had grown more complex with the passing decades.
Here, Gaillard's in the company of some fine musicians, most notably Buddy Tate on tenor saxophone and clarinet and Jay McShann on piano (Gaillard plays piano himself on a couple numbers, as well as guitar on others). While Gaillard's unique hybrid of friendly jive talk and easy grooves isn't as groundbreaking as it was when he first launched it in the '30s, this set is nonetheless solid and engaging; the sound of the band is broad and clear on this warm recording.
