This set is culled from a live performance Giant Sand did on N.Y.C.-area FM radio station WFMU. At the time, the band was touring in support of its GLUM album. As a band that relishes in celebrating spontaneity and the wonderful accidental moments of musical interplay and creation, this set finds Giant Sand squarely in its element.
Not content to merely trot out some of its favored songs one by one, Giant Sand lashes truncated versions of some of them together into the "BBQ Suite." Band leader Howe Gelb and his cohorts Joey Burns (on bass and guitar) and John Convertino (drums) are joined by former member Bill Elm on pedal steel guitar (Elm left and started the wonderful instrumental combo, Friends of Dean Martinez). The performances find Giant Sand at its most endearingly back-porch, with scaled-down arrangements and quieter playing.
