Topic Records' compilation The Barley Mow: Voice of the People captures the music of working people in the West Country of England in the 1950s through the field recordings of Peter Kennedy. Kennedy was a contemporary and friend of well-known American field recordist and folklorist Alan Lomax, and spent nearly four decades documenting the rural traditional folk music of the British Isles. The traditional dance tunes and songs featured on this collection were made in Suffolk in the early to mid-'50s and represent the region's rich cultural heritage that had yet to be well documented in recording. ~ Tim Monger
