Much like punk rock independent labels, reggae labels are known for shrewd cost-cutting measures, including the ever-popular split album. VP Records has mastered the formula and offers this title featuring two of the most talented Jamaican DJs of the '90s.
Beenie Man is nothing short of breathtaking, utilizing rapid-fire delivery (sometimes very reminiscent of Bounty Killer) combined with subject matter that ranges from comedic to socially conscious. Beenie Man has been recording since the age of 8, and his experience is obvious; dancehall classics such as "Once a Year" demonstrate just why he's the genre's current ruler. Mad Cobra is an enigma, fading from and re-gaining popularity throughout the '90s; he holds his ground tightly with such hits as the gangsta hymn "Gun Pop Off." With heavyweights such as The Firehouse Crew and Sly Dunbar providing the rhythms here, you can't possibly go wrong.
