Recorded between 1969 and 1974. Includes liner notes by Steven Gizicki.
This is part of EMI Records' Essential Limited Edition series.
Personnel: David Bowie (vocals, guitar, keyboards).
Liner Note Authors: Steven Gizicki; Kevin Cann.
Recording information: 1969-1974.
Photographers: Mick Rock ; Brian Ward ; Sukita.
Although numerous David Bowie compilations have been released over the years, the three-disc PLATINUM COLLECTION is one of the most thorough overviews of the famously mercurial performer, spanning the years 1969 to 1987. While the first two discs here were previously available individually (covering '69-74 and '74-79, respectively), the third disc marks the debut of the '80-87 retrospective, a wildly eclectic offering that includes revered classics (the restless "Space Oddity" sequel, "Ashes to Ashes," and the pulsing "Fashion"), massive hits (the inescapable "Let's Dance" and the Queen collaboration "Under Pressure"), and rarities (the haunting Brecht/Weill number "Alabama Song" and the chiming "Underground," from the fantasy film LABYRINTH). This 57-track collection is ideal for those wanting to dive deeper than Bowie's celebrated singles. It's also a nice reminder of his avoidance of musical complacency and his insistence on pushing the boundaries of pop music.
