60 Ft Dolls: Richard John Parfitt (vocals, guitar); Mike Cole (vocals, bass); Carl Bevan (drums).
Producers: Al Clay, Jon Langford, 60 Ft Dolls, Richard Jackson.
Recorded at Rockfield Studio, Wales, United Kingdom.
Liner Note Author: Roy Wilkinson.
Photographer: Penny Smith.
If Rancid is the new Clash, Green Day the new Buzzcocks and Social Distortion the new Social Distortion, then 60 Ft Dolls are the new Jam. Not the post-Mod, blue-eyed soul Jam, but the three-chords-a-cloud-of-dust-and-a-hearty-heigh-o-silver Jam. The Welsh band's debut album is full of the kind of brash insouciance and anger-as-energy that makes school principals nervous the world over.
Later for subtlety; each track on THE BIG THREE starts out raging, ends up raging and rages in the middle. The astonishing thing is that even in this world of post-post-retro-neo-punk rehashes, it works. This is probably due to the sincerity of the band's intentions. It never seems as though the Dolls are trying to show the world how much they sound like the Jam's IN THE CITY; that's just what they sound like. It's a far cry from innovation, but it's heartfelt and exciting nonetheless.
