Director Alan Parker's 1984 film BIRDY, from a psychological novel about a disturbed Vietnam vet who thinks he can fly, offered Peter Gabriel his first opportunity to score a feature film. He responded by taking selected instrumental tracks from some of his earlier recordings and toying with them at the mixing board (in a manner somewhat reminiscent of Brian Eno) until they became all-new pieces (frankly, if you can pick out the originals, you're good). What resulted was highly atmospheric and quite appropriate in the context of the film, although heard at home BIRDY seems more of an ambient album than a film score per se.
