"These Boots Are Made For Walkin'," with its sinister descending bass run, had made Nancy Sinatra an instant icon of cool, and the leather outfit she wore on the sleeve of the concurrent album cemented her image as a leather booted, mini-skirted cookie. Along with her signature tune, heard here in both stereo album and mono single mixes, she essays several songs by her producer/Svengali Lee Hazlewood, as well as a bunch of then-current hits, as was common practice at the time.
Highlights include a bossa nova version of Marianne Faithfull's "As Tears Go By" (with unsettlingly sophisticated jazz chording), a take on the Knickerbockers' "Lies" that nixes the song's Beatles sound-alike quality in favor of bizarre helium-voiced chorus vocals, and a horn-driven big band runthrough of the Fab Four's "Day Tripper." BOOTS is a quintessential '60s time capsule.
