Best known for his brilliant production of numerous country, folk, and rock acts of the 1960s, Jack Nitzsche was a talented orchestrator who brought a bit of high-mindedness to the pop albums he produced. On this '66 release (reissued on CD 40 years later), the opposite dynamic happens, as he brings a sparkling sense of drama and youthful energy (perhaps a product of his years in Phil Spector's famed Wrecking Crew) to some of Chopin's most affecting works. "Funeral Procession" is given a stirring and cinematic treatment, "Fantasie Prelude" floats on a romantic swell of strings and stardust, and the jaunty "Etude in E Major" seems to be waiting for a Dusty Springfield vocal.
