Classic Hip Hop Jams is a compilation by Warlock Records that focuses on old-school rap. Most of the songs included are relatively deep cuts, but even though they are not the most obvious choices, they are undeniable classics. Aside from two cuts from the golden age (the Jungle Brothers' "Straight Out the Jungle" and EPMD's "The Big Payback"), and the sorely misplaced "Snatch the Cat Back" from 2006 by Khia, most of the material stems from the pre-boom-bap era of the early to mid-'80s. The music from this time frame is sparse, concentrating solely on 808 drum machine beats, the occasional synth or bass, and the rappers' straightforward, trudging voices. Songs by Mantronix, T la Rock, Lovebug Starski, and Just-Ice make for a pretty fun overview of the early days, when graffiti and breakdancing prevailed. ~ Jason Lymangrover
