CONTRACTION was originally released in 1974, the second album by the cult-affiliated experimental music collective, Father Yod and the Spirit of '76. (After two more albums, they would change their name to Yahowa 13.) A single half-hour improvisation split into two LP sides, CONTRACTION consists of a stream-of-consciousness prose-poem/narration/sermon that leader Father Yod intones over an equally chaotic group improvisation that meanders from cocktail lounge jazz to heavy psych rock and back. Strange, amateurish, and oddly compelling.
