This collector's LP is one of the better Don Ewell records. Captured in concert in 1966, Ewell performs duets with bassist Charles Burrell (including Jelly Roll Morton, Earl Hines and Fats Waller medleys), plays a couple of other Morton numbers ("The Pearls" and "Sweet Substitute") and backs singer Barbara Dane on four trad jazz favorites. A well-rounded effort that finds Ewell paying tribute to his main influences, this frequently joyous album is becoming increasingly difficult to find. ~ Scott Yanow
