Blue Rodeo: Jim Cuddy, Greg Keelor (vocals, guitar, bongos); Bob Wiseman (accordian, piano, organ, bongos, grinder); Bazil Donovan (bass, bongos);
Cleave Anderson (drums).
Blue Rodeo's second album, 1989's DIAMOND MINE, blends the various influences so visible on the Toronto band's debut, OUTSKIRTS--Neil Young, Robbie Robertson, Gram Parsons, John Lennon--into a more seamless whole. Produced by Malcolm Burn, whose later work with Lisa Germano has a similar folk-pop grace, DIAMOND MINE was recorded nearly live, with minimal overdubs, in an empty Toronto theatre.
Some feel that the resulting empty, echoey sound blunts the impact of the songs, but if anything, it adds an extra atmospheric edge to Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor's folk- and country-tinged pop songs. The inclusion of descriptively-titled instrumental segues gives the album an overall shape and structure the debut lacked, and songs like the quietly seething "God and Country" and the early-Springsteen-style "Ballad Of The Dime Store Greaser And The Blonde Mona Lisa" are simply stellar.
