Composer David Friedman gets a chance to step into the spotlight as a vocalist on this 14-track collection on his Midder Music label. A Different Light: David Friedman Sings His Own Songs could be seen as a follow-up to the success of his 2003 off-Broadway show Listen to My Heart -- The Songs of David Friedman. The composer, who has written numerous hits for artists such as Diana Ross, Barry Manilow, and Nancy LaMott, and also for the Walt Disney Company, approaches his own material in a minimalistic fashion, backed only by his piano and joined occasionally by vocalists Emily Bindiger and Diane Garisto. While most of these compositions are usually accompanied by lush arrangements, it's interesting to hear Friedman perform them in this context. ~ Al Campbell
