Among other influences, the avant-garde pianist Ran Blake has a keen interest in film noir and its associated music. On DUO EN NOIR, a 1999 live set with the Italian trumpeter Enrico Rava, the two musicians combine the ominous theme from Hitchcock's VERTIGO with David Raskin's classic "Laura" in an intriguing medley, and follow it up with "The Spiral Staircase," another suspense classic from Hollywood's golden age. Many of the other standards, including "Nature Boy," "There's No You," and "There's A Small Hotel," while not directly film related, discreetly conjure up the romanticism of the '40s, as played by two simpatico modernist masters.
