In 1946 Indonesia, when it was still known as the Dutch East Indies colony, Dutch troops are deployed to quell the rising national revolution. Young soldier Johan finds himself enamored with the leadership of officer Raymond Westerling whom he follows, emulates, and obeys. However, when their counterinsurgency efforts begin purging operations on Sulawesi province, Johan suddenly questions the purpose of their military actions and presence.
