In the `60s and `70s, Chicago was home to one of America's most fertile soul music scenes, and though native sons like Sam Cooke, Curtis Mayfield, and Lou Rawls would play major roles in the development of soul music, hundreds of equally talented singers and musicians labored in relative obscurity on homegrown labels, creating top-shelf soul music for a small but devoted local audience.
