The pairing of singer Patrizia Conte and pianist Andrea Pozza is a perfect match. In this 2003 concert, Conte's expressive, slightly Italian-accented vocals (which often seem to have a touch of humor) explore a mix of songs from the Great American Songbook, a few classic jazz compositions, and even a pair of pop tunes associated with the overblown Barbra Streisand. The buoyant treatment of "They Can't Take That Away From Me" (strangely mislabelled as "Nice Work if You Can Get It"), the brisk bossa nova setting of "Speak Low," along with the fun-filled "I Can't Give You Anything but Love" (in which she salutes Rose Murphy and Louis Armstrong by imitating their respective vocal styles). Her scatting in "Take the 'A' Train" is reminiscent of Ella Fitzgerald's playfulness and she's obviously listened to Sarah Vaughan as she enjoys dropping her voice into a much lower range without warning. While "The Way We Were" works beautifully, "People" (with its idiotic lyrics "People who need people/Are the luckiest people in the world") is best heard as an instrumental. Pozza is the consummate accompanist, delving into a bit of stride piano at times but always choosing the perfect backing for the singer. The last two tracks, including "On Green Dolphin Street" and a reprise of "Take the 'A' Train" feature Conte in a separate performance with a trio led by veteran pianist Renato Sellani. Patrizia Conte, along with Andrea Pozza, are both deserving of wider recognition outside their native land. ~ Ken Dryden
